Taking your Caravan on a Ferry

Taking your caravan on a Ferry for the first time can be a daunting experience. This vlog should give you an idea of what to expect.

In July 2024, spent 2 weeks in the Lake District. This meant taking the Stena Line Ferry from Belfast to Cairnryan. Before our trip we researched what people did with their caravan when on board the Ferry.

There were many differing opinions. We put these together and applied some common sense. This video shows what we did and the list is also below.

  1. Car alarm disabled – in some cars you can disable the interior motion sensors. We heard other car alarms going off during the trip.
  2. Jockey wheel down – to stop the caravan putting unnecessary vertical pressure on the car’s tow bar.
  3. Handbrake on – to stop back and forward forces on the car.
  4. Electrics unplugged – We’ve heard of people returning to their car to find the battery flat. This is because the car had been supplying power to the Caravan’s fridge and/or ATC system
  5. Towing mirrors removed – in case someone walked into them or decided to ‘borrow’ them.

We hope you find this useful. If you have other tips on what to do when boarding a ferry with a caravan, please add your comments below.
